DRAMATIC MINE DISASTER IN BROMLEY

This week, 8-12 year old children in the Bromley area classes of the Helen O’Grady Drama Academy, one of the largest drama schools of its kind in the world, reflected upon the dramatic rescue of the 33 brave Chilean miners as they performed their class play, ‘The Mine Disaster’.  As the men trapped for 69 days in the San Jose mine continued to be brought to safety, the children discussed information they had heard on the news to explore the theme of being involved in a disaster and working as a team to be brought to safety.   Young people between the ages of 5 – 18 can enroll for these affordable classes which develop enthusiasm, confidence and communication skills.

On several occasions during the term, children are given the opportunity to further express themselves in their lessons by using costumes and props. Adding these ‘extras’ helps the children’s creativity and characterisation.  The Academy’s specialist drama teachers, who are all CRB checked and undergo extensive training in the Helen O’Grady teaching methods, ensure each student is encouraged in a warm, positive learning environment, where mutual respect is a high priority.

The curriculum, which has been developed over 26 years internationally, is ongoing and progressive, and young people who attend can remain in the Academy from 5 to 18 years of age without ever repeating a lesson. This highly developed original drama programme caters for three age-groups: Youth Theatre (11-18 years), Upper Primary (9-11 years), Lower Primary (5-8 years).

Helen Walls, Principal of the Academy, said, “Children love to dress up and use props. It is wonderful to see them exploring topical themes such as the mine disaster as well as traditional stories and everyday situations through drama and I know that each and every student enjoys being part of something positive and successful in our child-centred, friendly classes.”
